MAYFIELD, Ky. - Dr. George Howard Pitman, 89, of Mayfield died Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Florida.
Dr. Pitman was born September 27, 1920, to Pearl Melvin Pitman and George Kimbrough Pitman in Graves County, Kentucky.
Dr. Pitman was a graduate of Murray State University and Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was an optometrist in Mayfield for 48 years; an active member in his beloved Seven Oaks Church of Christ; served as chairman of the Mayfield City School Board for 15 years; was a past president of the Mayfield Kiwanis Club and was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
Surviving Dr. Pitman are three children: two sons, Robert and wife Glenda Pitman of Mayfield and Van Pitman of Mayfield; one daughter, Len Pitman Whitfield of Stuart, Florida.
He was grandfather to Heather Clymer of Mayfield, Ky., Evan Pitman of Mayfield, Ky., Kirk Whitfield of Atlanta, Ga., Griffin Whitfield of Stuart, Fla., Jessie Boyer of Baton Rouge, La., VanIan Pitman of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Erin Pitman of Tampa, Fla. He was proud great-grandfather of Carley and Carrigan Clymer, both of Mayfield, Ky., Tanner Pit Whitfield of Stuart, Fla., Sabrey and Mara Boyer, both of Baton Rouge, La.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Ray Pitman, who died in 1996; two brothers, Eugene Pitman and Ralph Pitman; a sister, Ruth Schmidt; and his parents.
Services for Dr. Pitman will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010, in the Byrn Funeral Home Chapel with Josh Ketchum officiating. Interment will be in the Mayfield Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield.
