Heavens gates opened for Eugene Leek, 66, of Melber, on July 13, 2008. He passed away at Western Baptist Hospital after fighting a long and courageous battle with bone marrow cancer since 2003.
Mr. Leek fought his cancer not only for himself but also for others by participating in an experimental program at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
He was a member of Melber Baptist Church and retired from Continental General Tire in 1997 with 32 years of service. He was co-owner and co-operator with his wife of Sherry & Friends Antiques mall in downtown Paducah for 18 years. He was a 1962 graduate of Lowes High School and a former field coordinator of the Melber Ballpark where he coached Khoury League baseball. He also coached Little League football and basketball at Lowes Elementary School. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a Duke of Paducah. He was past Cub Master of Pack 104 Cub Scouts and was a Webelos leader.
Mr. Leek is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sherry Walker Leek; and two sons, Jason Scott Leek and wife, Sherry Ann, of Melber and Nicholas Walker Pearson of Melber; and two daughters, Lauren Elizabeth Pearson and Natalie Erinn Pearson of Melber. He is survived by two grandsons, Issac Eugene Leek and John William Leek of Melber. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Florence Walker of Reidland; and two brothers-in-law, Johnny Walker (Phyllis) of Lone Oak and Russell Walker of Paducah; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Issac (Doc) Leek and Hazel Cruse Leek; and a sister, Dorothy Lee; and brother, James Leek.
Funeral services for Mr. Leek will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Cruse will officiate with entombment in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the funeral home.
